甲骨文“卜”字，是象形字。字形像灼烧后龟甲上显示的纵横裂纹。本义指的是殷周时期的一种用火灼龟甲、兽骨取兆以占吉凶的行为，通过观察烧灼后的裂纹来预测未来的吉凶。
The oracle bone script form of the character "卜" is a pictograph. Its form resemblesthe vertical and horizontal cracks that appear on a tortoise shell after burning. The original meaning refers to the practice during the Shang and Zhou dynasties of burning tortoise shells and animal bones to divine good or bad fortune. By observing the resultingcracks, people would predict future events.
