完整的甲骨文“新”由“辛”“斤”“木”组成。“斤”是斧头，全字意为用斧头砍伐树木以取柴薪，所以“新”也是“薪”的初文。其中，“辛”可看作声符，其下部有时与“木”的上部可共享笔画组成“亲”。卜辞中用作新旧之新，也用作地名和祭名。

The oracle bone script form of "新(Xin)"is composed of "卒(Xin)""斤(Jin)", and "木(Mu)", "斤(Jin)"represents an axe, which signifes using an axe to chop wood for fuel. Therefore, "新(Xin)"is also the primitive form of "薪(Xin)", meaning fire-wood. In this character, "率(Xin)"can be considered a phonetic component, and its lower part sometimes combines with the upper part of "水(Mu)"to form the character of "亲(Qin)". In oracle bone scripts, "新(Xin)"is used to represent "new", as well as in place and sacrificial names.
