Deciphering Oracle Bone Script | 三 十 (sān shí)
The oracle bone script form for "三 十 (sān shí:thirty)" places three "十 (shí: ten)" characters within one character and connects the lower parts, still pronounced as the two syllables "三(sān: three)" and "十". This phenomenon is called "combined characters". In oracle bone scripts, combined characters are used to represent numbers in the tens, hundreds, thousands, and ten thousands, etc.
