甲骨文“臣”字，字形整体看起来像是一只竖立的眼睛。人在低头时，眼睛即处于竖立的位置，表示了俯首屈从之意。本义指奴仆。
The oracle bone inscription for“臣（chén）” resembles an upright eye. When people lowertheir heads, their eyes are in this position, signifying submission. The original meaning of“臣（chén）”is slave.
