The character "食"(shí), in oracle bone script is a Chinese character formed through associative compound creation, combining two pictographic elements to convey a new meaning. The upper part, resembling an inverted mouth, signifies eating, while the lower part resembles a food container. Its original meaning is "to eat" and it also served as a term related to time in oracle inscriptions.
